And if its the end, its not the only end…
WWR started as drunken idea late 2005 during a radio broadcast of new wave / indie alternative show its became an ‘official’ being early 2006 now as we approach our 8th birthday rumours have been nigh that this is all coming to a close, i’ve been asked in person and online around 15/20 times in the last month or so heres to clear it up..
The truth is its extremely difficult to keep something like this functioning in every avenue, shows, art, recordings, zines, posters the list goes on everything costs money, yes that dirty word.
Many great things in this city and even country have sprouted from WWR over the years hopefully giving other normal people the confidence to create their scenes in their respective towns or record their own music or start their own label or in some cases people coming to University here just to come to our shows, all things i’m madly proud of, its very rare i talk about what goes on ‘behind the scenes’ here.
It’s worth noting that since i started doing shows full time as opposed in my living room at my old student house i’ve lost a significant amount of money most of which will just fade off into the atmosphere and il never make back, but thats fine if i wanted to make money id be working with some dogshit haircut bands it really isn’t all that hard you just throw money at them but what’s so special about that? nothing thats correct.
Surviving on beans and bread for a week because you lost all your money for food that week on paying a band you love is all part of process the important thing here is to not give up like so many promoters do.
More than anything these shows aren’t for statute or personal gain they are for YOU the fan just like me whos loves this music and these bands as much as you do, they are a release from your shitty lives or whatever problem you have going on for 3/4 hours a night and its very important to have this, non conventional thinking and conversations that last a lifetime are more important than any amount of money thats why i continue to do this.
Last nights show was perfect example of this, everything that was talked about between songs from the bands is what this idea of ‘scene’ is all about, so please continue to come out and show some love and support to these musicians who travel halfway around the world to come play for you.
We are NOT stopping just slowing down and being more creative and limited with shows to make them ‘special’ and so that people appreciate what they have in their town and don’t just take ‘another gig’ for granted because its taken years of hard work to bring these bands here so please continue to give something back and raise a glass
i continually strive to keep the shows as cheap as possible so we don’t all have to pay £50 to go to london or a neighbouring city so please keep spreading the good word of these shows via mouth or whatever portable electronic device you currently hold in your hands.
Truth to be told this isn’t going to last forever so savour the taste while its still around into 2014 because there is nothing worse than regret of ’ ow i wish i went to that..’ its important to be part of something so do it while you can.
Theres a couple of shows left in 2013 but none more important than our chrimbo bash in which we are now donating all profits to the tragedy currently happening in the Philippines - full details are here
the lineup is a perfect example of what we do across the board musically so get involved, much love see you at the next WWR show -
