Show Diary - Expire - 10/02/14
We had 3 shows this week so its been a busy one, this edition will feature Mondays show With Expire!
Mon - Expire / Coldburn / Forsaken / Outsider
This was an Avocado tour, for those in the know who promote also will know what to expect from this, mostly hard to bring down fee’s, tour packages usually consisting of one band you’ve literally never heard of or has any pull in your country and over 40 merch designs between the bands taking up 80% of your wall space.
Sometimes they can be good as long as the band is nice and you can get a few conversations out of them with common ground, today luckily was one of those, the problem with being on the south coast is we are usually the 1st show in the UK after they have been to europe and been treated like kings hospitality wise ( endless alcohol and food and a place to sleep for everyone )
The problem with the UK is of course small venues and promoters such as ourselves can only afford to feed and beer to a certain degree since we pay everything out of ticket sales and aren’t government funded unlike europe, so when someone asks you to feed 16 people and find them a place to stay its kind of hard unless you live in a fucking mansion.
Never the less, dinner was made people were fed and beered fairly and tshirts were sold no doubt?
We had a few gear troubles on this show, a lot of times American bands don’t like sharing because they are renting backline from mainline europe and don’t want to risk other bands breaking their stuff, sometimes this is a pain in the ass for promoters such as myself because i don’t want 3 drum kits in the venue and 20 min changeovers between each band, as classically hardcore bands do not like soundchecking, instead they setup then fuck about on stage for 10 mins before they play AKA a soundcheck (line check) but just during the show…
The show itself was attended by around 70 or so people which is a great for a monday night, we don’t do that many ‘hardcore’ shows as they are very hit and miss unless you are putting on one of the big 10/15 hardcore bands that crossover to punk or metal kids then no doubt you are setting yourself up to lose money its just the way the ‘niche’ hardcore scene is but we have a love for it so the shows have to happen!
Of course there was some ‘hate moshin’ that night but alas hardcore shows are ‘hardcore’ for a reason and the adolescents in the crowd are angry little fucks so they can dance as violently as they like, they’ve paid to get in and they are aware of what’s going on, a few bloody faces that night but still smiles after all.
Every band tonight was on top form, Southampton has a lovely little younger hardcore fanbase at the moment its refreshing to see 16-20 year olds doing something creative with their time and not just getting wasted on on shit cider and whacky drugs.
Expire have them little something special that makes them stand out from other boring hardcore bands and they are pleasure to watch throwing themselves about the place they do they business, we settle and say thanks and they head off into the night.
Check out their music here and throw yourself around your bedroom and get a mirror to practice your two steps remember…
Lovely bit of @mattpryorsongs from tonight! :)

Show diaries 2014 - Intro
Hi internet, im Ricky the guy/person/made that created this whole mess.
i’ve decided for 2014 im going to start blogging all WWR shows for the next 6 months, i was going to write a lot down but its far easier to type right?
Brief history for those of you who don’t know i started this back at the end of 05’ with my friend Tom as a radio show it was then called ‘WWRR’ the other R being radio of course, we turnt a new rave radio show into a punk / ska/ hardcore show, such anarchists!
I then created a zine called AOVM TV a video zine in which i went around interviewing a shit ton of bands and also shooting some live footage on a really crappy £120 DV camera, and we created 3 printed zines in the process, much love to Simon stroud for helping me created those.(sellout)
Ross Shroff became the co presenter for the final year of the radio show he liked to keep things PC.
I only started doing shows in around 08’ in my old Living room in newcombe road with such bands as The Don Ramos Players, OTDH, you me and the atom bomb and a bunch more from that point on it became addictive (as most promoters will know..)
its now 2014 and somehow i’m still doing this, i book, promote, finance and arrange everything for all WWR shows so everytime you see that lovely hand painted banner hanging its on my neck, ha!
I have a few others that help with rider and sleeping places & merch (we always have t shirts buy one!) but i find it easier doing everything myself because if anything fucks up i only have myself to blame (and im way organised now)
Usually the average show count for WWR shows per year is 35ish this year itl probably be about 50 including 2 WTFEST’S
ow also that festival called WTFEST i do every year which is usually 50+ bands over 4 days and right mental mess, we have a few local artists create posters and shirts for us on the pivotal shows which are then sold at the show, Olly T, Tim Dutton being the main 2 humans.
Many great things have come from this little promotion they’ve opened the doors to many great friends around the world, chances to jump onto tours E.G Paul selling shirts for the front bottoms, Beez doing the same for Broadway calls, Cats aye records, number 3 houseshows etc so its a very creative positive being that extends far beyond Southampton ( for more see WWR Documentary coming late 2014..)
So im going to be talking about the process of each show with some flashback stories along the way, i hope you enjoy im only doing this 6 months! The book version will hit shelves summer 2015…
